What is kundalini yoga?

Kundalini Yoga like other yoga forms is about creating a balance and union of body, mind and spirit. However Kundalini yoga specifically is known as the “Yoga of Awareness” because through it’s unique style, the soul becomes more awakened fostering a deeper relationship with your true authentic self. Kundalini Yoga is considered the most comprehensive form of yoga in that it combines all the aspects of asanas (postures), mudras (hand positions), pranayam (breathing), meditation and mantra (chanting) to achieve a healthy, happy elevated life. Kundalini practice focuses on the idea of achieving mastery over one’s own mind; strengthening the neutral mind in order to remain grounded, balanced and centered even in difficult circumstances.

What to expect

Kundalini Yoga is a comprehensive practice combining physical moments with chanting and meditation. Each class will include a Kriya, which is a specific sequence of postures in combination with breathing and sound. There are literally thousands of Kriyas in Kundalini Yoga, each having it’s own focus on a certain body system with exact timing and sequencing to increase physical and mental vitality. Therefore every class can feel different and unique depending on the focus of the specific Kriya chosen for the class. Each class will also have a deep relaxation (Savasana) portion and a meditation portion, which may or may not include chanting. Music is also a large component of Kundalini Yoga; the practice is typically accompanied with beautiful yogic music.

who can do kundalini yoga?

Simple. Everyone! Kundalini Yoga is for all levels of experience, all classes are suitable for beginners. Kundalini Yoga is universal and has no religious affiliation.

what do i wear?

Loose, breathable, comfortable clothing. Typically Kundalini Yogis wear all white when they practice. Do you need to? Absolutely not.

However, for your interest, the reason for wearing white is that it is thought to expand your aura and create a powerful interface between you and your environment, reflecting what is outside of you so that you can go deep within yourself. The spectrum of light energy that makes up the colour white contains the energies of all colours. By wearing white, all the colours are available to support and enhance the aura and the eight chakras.

What do i bring?

Most importantly, an open mind! Kundalini Yoga can be a very personally expanding experience if you are open to a new connection with yourself.

Bring a yoga mat, water and a cushion, bolster or block that might make it more comfortable for you to sit. You may want a shawl, sweater or blanket for Shavasana (deep relaxation) so that you are cozy.
